Tesla plans to build a gigafactory in Nuevo León, Mexico, at a cost exceeding $5bn, chief executive Elon Musk said at the company's annual Investor Day. The facility, which could create up to 6,000 direct jobs, is positioned to become the largest electric vehicle manufacturing plant in the world. Battery production is also under consideration at the site.

Nuevo León sits close to established North American supply chains and a competitive labour market, factors that influenced the site selection. The investment figure comfortably exceeds most recent industrial commitments to the Mexican north, where foreign manufacturers have accelerated factory development since the signing of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

For the surrounding region, indirect employment effects could multiply the headline jobs figure several times over. Suppliers, logistics operators, and service firms across northern Mexico are expected to orient new capacity around the campus as Tesla builds out its manufacturing base.

Should battery production proceed alongside vehicle assembly, the plant's strategic weight would increase further. Vertical integration at that scale tends to compress unit costs and shorten output timelines, advantages that take years and significant capital for rivals to replicate. Several large-scale EV manufacturers have struggled to achieve comparable integration outside their home markets.

Global passenger EV sales topped 10 million units in 2022 and are forecast to rise sharply through the decade, intensifying pressure on all manufacturers to expand low-cost production capacity. The Nuevo León announcement places Tesla at the front of that expansion, though the timeline for groundbreaking and full production output has not yet been disclosed.
